The Dallas Cowboys are aiming to strengthen their running back lineup by bringing in veteran Dalvin Cook. Cook is set to join the Cowboys’ practice squad, and there’s a chance he could play in the season opener against the Cleveland Browns.

At 29, Cook was a second-round pick for the Vikings in 2017 and ranks third in rushing yards in Minnesota’s franchise history. He achieved four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from 2019 to 2022, with his standout year being 2020 where he rushed for 1,557 yards and 16 touchdowns. Cook also boasts 236 career receptions for 1,872 yards and five touchdowns.

Last season, Cook played for the Jets and Ravens. In 15 games with the Jets, he managed 214 yards on 3.2 yards per carry. He later joined the Ravens in January, contributing 23 yards on eight carries during their divisional round victory over the Texans but did not feature in the AFC Championship Game against the Chiefs.

Cook will be part of a committee approach in the Cowboys’ backfield, joining Ezekiel Elliott—who returns after a stint with the New England Patriots—alongside 4-year pro, Rico Dowdle and 2nd-year pro, Deuce Vaughn.

The Cowboys enter 2024 with several uncertainties. They recently inked a four-year, $136 million extension for wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, including a record $38 million signing bonus for a receiver. Defensive star Micah Parsons remains under contract through 2025 and is eyeing a new deal. Quarterback Dak Prescott’s future with the team is also up in the air, as he could either sign the biggest contract in NFL history for “America’s Team” or move elsewhere in 2025.

For now, the Cowboys aim to stabilize their running back situation, and Cook could play a crucial role in achieving that.
