A jury has reached a death penalty verdict for Dylann Roof, the man who shot and killed nine church members at the historically Black Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina in June 2015. The verdict came after a prosecutor reminded jurors about the "god-fearing" spirit of the church members killed during the massacre and testimonies from the victims' families and friends.

This weekend, there will be numerous events throughout the state of South Carolina to honor the nine lives that were lost.

Church officials gave the families of the victims $1.5 million, but are retaining $1.8 million for building maintenance, memorials and scholarships.
