This is one of the largest school districts in Texas. A takeover by the Texas Education Agency means that the district’s school boards and superintendents could be replaced with state appointees. This move could last up to 3 years. Fort Worth ISD continues to try to turn the district around after a campus received 5 years of consecutive failing grades, triggering state law that requires state intervention. The TEA would oversee district operations such as budgets, staffing, and policy decisions. The goal is to address existing problems and eventually return control to the local community once the district improves. The current school board of Fort Worth ISD will be removed, and a board of leadership will be appointed from there; the leadership of Fort Worth ISD could look different. This process often takes a few months.

How did the district get here?
State law says that if a campus has an unacceptable performance rating for 5 consecutive school years, the commissioner will either appoint managers to govern the entire school district or close the campus. The campus that sparked this is the former leadership academy at Forest Oak 6th Grade. After years of struggles, Fort Worth ISD was proactive in deciding to close the school after the 2023- 2024 school year. Going back to the school’s TEA ratings from the past few years, in 2016, the school was actually called the “Glencrest 6th grade school,” and the TEA had not started A-F ratings yet. That year, the campus earned a rating of improvement required, scoring a 52% on student achievement, 27% on student progress, and closing gaps. In 2017, the school received another improvement required rating, dropping to 47% in student achievement 17% in student progress. In 2017, lawmakers adopted the A-F ratings. In 2018, the campus got a 53. In 2019, the school bumped up to 57% which was still a failing grade. In 2020 and 2021, no schools were graded due to COVID-19, and in 2022, the school was renamed to the Academy at Forest Oak 6th grade, with an overall score of 58, which was again failing. However, a law had been passed that allowed schools that scored below a 70 to not be rated. In 2023, the academy received a score of 59, which is still a failing score under the state’s system. That makes 2023 the 5th consecutive failing year, even while discounting the years impacted by the pandemic and legislature. Fort Worth did close the school; however, TEA commissioner Morath said that decision is not impacting his decision to take action to consider state action in the district.
