Tatyana Ali Talks Black Mom Life, Health Justice & Baby Yams
Actress, advocate, and mother of two, Tatyana Ali took some time out for a candid interview at the Black Moms Fair, sharing intimate reflections on motherhood, the urgent need for improved Black maternal health care, and how her cultural roots are shaping the way she raises her sons.
Widely recognized for her role on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Ali has grown into a powerful voice for Black women, particularly in the realm of motherhood. During the conversation, she spoke passionately about the experiences that have shaped her—highlighting the wisdom passed down from her mother and grandmother, and how that generational knowledge influences how she parents today.
Ali also addressed the medical disparities that disproportionately affect Black mothers in the United States. “There are all kinds of revolutionary things happening around black motherhood right now, I think theres a reclamation of ways of mothering and being in community with each other. I believe we have everything we need,” she stated.
Adding another layer to her mission, Ali introduced her new brand, Baby Yams—a deeply personal project rooted in heritage and sustainability. The company creates custom baby quilts using African textiles, each piece intentionally designed to tell a story and nurture the next generation. “I had 50 blankets made, we just really launched..and 100% of those blankets went to grants and scholarships. It must’ve taken me 35 minutes to wrap the first one because I just wanted everything to be so perfect. They sold out in three days.” she shared.
Through honesty and grace, Tatyana Ali continues to use her voice to uplift and empower. Her interview at the Black Moms Fair is more than a conversation—it’s a call to honor legacy, demand change, and embrace the joy and complexity of Black motherhood.
