DALLAS – A man laid across DART tracks on Christmas Eve and was killed by an oncoming train, according to officials with the transportation organization.

The incident happened at about 6 p.m. near Dyer crossing, north of Mockingbird Station.

Officials said the unidentified 56-year-old placed himself on the tracks in front of an approaching southbound DART Rail Red Line train.

They said the train operator saw the man and activated an emergency break, but could not stop the train quickly enough to avoid hitting him.

Red Line service between Mockingbird and Lovers Lane stations was replaced by bus service during the investigation.

According to DART, the incident is the first rail fatality since March 2007.
