Back in early April, Snoop Dogg posted a photo to Instagram of himself alongside Billy Spears, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper with the caption, “Me n my deputy dogg.” Spears was subsequently reprimanded by his superiors for the photograph, which was taken by Snoop’s publicist at Austin’s South by Southwest music festival.

Now, Billboard are citing emails which have reportedly been made public, as saying that prior to reprimanding Spears, one of Texas’ chief law enforcement officials called Snoop Dogg a “dope smoking cop hater.”

Spears’ attorney has reportedly obtained emails through open records laws showing that the incident went all the way to DPS Director Steve McCraw.

“Apparently he would rather work the convention while on a week’s vacation to earn additional money rather than take an additional tour on the border,” McCraw reportedly wrote in the email. “He must not understand that he was being lampooned by a dope smoking cop hater which reflects very poorly on the department.”

Tom Vinger, a spokesperson for DPS, has since confirmed the authenticity of the email but has declined to comment on its content.

Billy Spears is reportedly seeking unspecified damages in a Travis County court. According to Billboard, Spears claims his discipline was retaliation for filing a complaint several weeks earlier against a superior.
