Manny Pacquiao’s camp says the fighter boxed through a 12-round match against Floyd Mayweather Saturday night with a serious right shoulder injury. Pacquiao reportedly requested to take an anti-inflammatory shot in the ailing shoulder before losing Saturday night’s fight but was denied by the Nevada Athletic Commission. According to Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, “Pac-Man” sustained the injury roughly three weeks ago during a training session. Based on official scorecards from the fight, Pacquiao still managed to throw 429 punches. Yahoo! Sports reports the following:

“‘We felt the [rehabilitative] work that was done on the shoulder during training would give him the opportunity to use the right hand,’ promoter Bob Arum said. ‘We were disappointed when in the third round the injury kicked up again, but this is always the case in sport. … He heals the injury, thinks he’s conquered it and it flares up again.’”

Per policy, fighters are not allowed such treatment as anti-inflammatory injections without disclosing injuries before a match. Both Pacquiao and his camp say they disclosed the injury weeks in advance, but a spokesman for the Nevada Athletic Commission said he didn’t hear about the matter until 6:08 p.m. Pacific Time Saturday.

“I did my best, but my best wasn’t good enough,” Pacquiao said in a post-fight press conference. “I don’t want to make alibis or complain or anything. Three weeks before the fight, I skipped my training for that reason. We did an MRI, and there’s a tear in my right shoulder.”

Mayweather said he will relinquish his titles and fight in a non-title bout in September. Saturday’s fight netted him an estimated $100 million, and during his post-fight conference, he conceded he also had injuries to his hands and arms.
