People demonstrate 02 October 2007 in Washington, DC, charging that the civil rights of the Jena Six have been grossly violated and to demand that all charges against them be dropped. A US judge on 27 September 2007 released one of the six black teenagers whose arrest in Louisiana brought 20,000 people to a small town to protest what they see as racial discrimination in the US judicial system. Mychal Bell, 17, had been jailed since December when he and five other black students who became known as the ‘Jena Six’ beat up a white student at school following months of racial tension in the town of Jena. Several dozen people from the Washington community and the northeastern region too part in the protest in front of the US Justice Department. In the latest outbreak of violence 6 black students attacked a white student who denies provoking them. Shaw spent 7 months in jail subsequent to the incident and Bailey spent 4 months inside, neither could afford to post bail and both are still to be tried on the charges of attempted murder. Shaw now lives with the Bailey’s despite their economically challenged circumstances.
