Zoe Saldana Opens Up About Her Battle With An Autoimmune Disease

Guardians Of The Galaxy - Photo Call

Actress Zoe Saldana recently opened up about her battle with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder.

“Your body doesn’t have the energy it needs to filter toxins, causing it to believe that it has an infection, so it’s always inflamed,” Zoe told The Edit. “You create antibodies that attack your glands, so you have to eat clean.”

The Stark Trek Beyond star explains she has cut gluten and dairy out of her diet to help calm her body down. The illness has caused her to pay more attention to her body in general — including her bones.

“I had a great time in my twenties. Then your doctor says you’re losing calcium in your bones,” the 38-year-old explained. “What the f*ck is that?! I would hear those conversations with my mom and grandma, thinking I’d never get there … But all of a sudden it hits you. I sh*t you not, it’s from night to day.”

Hopefully her life adjustments will keep her strong and healthy.
