At Least 50 Dead In Mass Shooting At Gay Nightclub In Orlando

Stories have been pouring out from the survivors of Sunday morning’s attack in the Orlando nightclub that left 50 dead and more than 53 injured. One account, from a young woman said that the shooter, Omar Mateen, had a surprising message for Black people during his bloody attack.

In the video, the young woman can be seen with hospital bands still on her wrist explains that she was amongst those hiding in the bathroom when the attack began. She had been shot in her leg, and laid there during the hostage crisis.

She then explained that during those hours she hear Mateen call 911 and explain that “the reason why he was doing this is because he wants America to stop bombing his country.” She also said that she heard Mateen claim allegiance to ISIS over the phone, as well.

The young woman continues. “And after that, he then spoke to use directly,” she said. “He said, ‘Are there any Black people in here.’ I was too afraid to answer but there was an African American male in the stall…and he said, ‘Yes there are about six or seven of us,’ and the gunman responded back to him saying, “You know, I don’t have a problem with black people, this is about my country, you guys suffered enough.’”

It is an interesting statement to make, however Mateen’s message seems largely meaningless after you consider the fact that a rather large number of the victims of his attack were Black men and women, and many more were men of Latino descent, two demographics that certainly understand that prejudice and hate that Mateen claimed to be fighting against.
