A Michigan judge tossed out the sentence of a Detroit man wrongfully convicted of four murders in a narrative that is hauntingly familiar to scores of African-Americans in the criminal justice system.

Davontae Sanford, 23, who served close to nine years in prison for a quadruple homicide, left prison in Ionia, Michigan, Wednesday without speaking to reporters, writes the Detroit News:

After what attorneys are calling a failure of the justice system, Wayne County Circuit Judge Brian Sullivan ordered Tuesday that Sanford be released and that his conviction vacated.

[…]

Professional hit man Vincent Smothers, convicted in other metro Detroit killings, said that he, not Sanford, was responsible for the deaths.

Sanford was only 14 in September 2007 when four people were shot to death in a drug house at 19741 Runyon St. on Detroit’s northeast side. Sanford lived a few blocks away. He was arrested after standing outside his home near the crime scene in his pajamas while police were canvassing for witnesses.

We wish Sanford luck in recovering his life after such a horrific miscarriage of justice.
