New Hampshire voters will make their choice in the first-in-the-nation primary election Tuesday in an effort to narrow the field of presidential candidates in the 2016 race.

Voting booths opened across most of the state at 8 a.m. ET. And if surveys of early voters prove correct, political outliers – Democratic Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Republican real estate mogul Donald Trump – hold comfortable leads over their adversaries.

But each faces a formidable opponent whose support is on the rise. For Sanders, that opponent is former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. For Trump, it’s Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who outperformed the reality television star in the critical town of Dixville Notch. Kasich beat Trump 3-2 among Republicans early Tuesday, while Sanders claimed all four votes among Democrats, reports CNN.

Tuesday’s primary comes after last week’s Iowa caucuses where Texas Sen. Ted Cruz claimed the top prize and Clinton eked out a win over Sanders by a slim margin.
