Earlier this week, Billboard caused an internet firestorm with a single, tasteless Tweet and now they’re doing some backtracking in an attempt to clean up the mess.

In short, whomever runs the Billboard Twitter account thought it’d be a good idea to send out this Tweet, making an overtly sexualized and bizarre inference about Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s 2-year-old daughter North West with an accompanying photo of her licking a lollipop.

Shortly after the Tweet went viral and the internet exploded with backlash, it was deleted and replaced with a different caption accompanying the same photo.

A series of apologetic tweets from the publication insisting that the initial Tweet was misinterpreted soon followed and also began to circulating around the web.

The actual article behind the link tweeted in conjunction with the ill-captioned photo was centered around North’s recent (adorable) run-in with the paparazzi, where she was heard telling photographers not to take her picture as she headed to ballet class with her nanny. However, although Billboard insisted that their caption was only intended to liken North’s yearning for privacy to the that of her parents, most didn’t buy the explanation, pointing out that the photo used to accompany the tweet speaks volumes to their true intentions.

Kim or Kanye have yet to address the tweet or the uproar it caused.
