Ever since she was a child, Jewel Shuping has wanted to be blind. Her dream finally came true in 2006, when a sympathetic psychologist agreed to pour drain cleaner into her eyes.

The 30-year-old North Carolina resident suffers from Body Integrity Identity Disorder. According to BIID.org, the disorder is diagnosed “when a person’s idea of how they should look does not match their physical form.”

Jewel was so set on going blind, she taught herself braille by the age of 20 in preparation.

She recently shared the story of the painful procedure with the public via Barcroft Media: “My eyes were screaming and I had some drain cleaner going down my cheek burning my skin. But all I could think was ‘I am going blind, it is going to be okay.’” Soon after, she was rushed to the hospital, against her own wishes, but the damage was already done. The full process may have taken six months to truly take effect, but Jewel was satisfied with the outcome.

Her family thought the blindness was accidental, and once they learned the truth, they stopped talking to her. She did have the support of her former fiancé though, as he is registered as legally blind.

“The only thing I would want to see again is my dad’s face, although sadly that’s not possible as he’s no longer with us,” Jewel said.

“I really feel this is the way I was supposed to be born, that I should have been blind from birth.”

Now, Jewel’s dream is to help other blind people live independent lives. What do you think of her story?
