This past Saturday at a State Regional Final Basketball game in San Antonio, which featured Alamo Heights High School, from Alamo Heights IDS, which is located in San Antonio and San Antonio ISD’s Edison High.

Alamo Heights is a Prep School with a student population that is 62% White. And apparently the whole basketball team is White.

Edison is predominately Latino and their Basketball team is mostly Latino.

So after the game, during the trophy presentation for Alamo Heights, who defeated Edison High, A group of Alamo Heights Students started chanting “USA, USA”, which was clear racial statement to the Latino Students, Families and players, who are American Citizens.

San Antonio ISD’s athletics director, Gil Garza, insisted that Alamo Heights boys basketball coach Andrew Brewer acted quickly to quash the inflammatory chants.

Gil Garza was quoted as saying

“To be attacked about your ethnicity and being made to feel that you don’t belong in this country is terrible. Why can’t people just applaud our kids? It just gets old and I’m sick of it. Once again, we’re on pins and needles wondering what’s going to happen.”

Edison High has filed an official complaint with the UIL and The Alamo Heights School District will now have 10 days to officially respond to the complaint.

Alamo Height ISD Superintendent, Kevin Brown, was quick to issue an apology on behalf of his students.

“Obviously, we were disappointed that this happened, that’s not who we are as a community and that’s not who we are as a school. It’s not something that’s acceptable for us. Our kids are very respectable. We have to remember that they’re teenagers, and kids make mistakes. Still, there are consequences. We have tried to use this as a teachable moment for them. We have talked to our students. We’ve taken responsibility for it, although what happened is not representative of everybody who was there.”

Alamo Heights next opponent is Dallas Kimball and the game is TODAY!

Here is the School District’s Mission Statement, as stated in their website:

The Alamo Heights Independent School District, the heart of our community whose passion is excellence, will educate and empower every student to excel academically and as a confident, compassionate citizen with impeccable character and a global perspective through engaging, personally challenging, and relevant experiences that inspire learning for life. Live Honorably – Act Humbly – Model Dignity
