On Sunday, May 1, President Barack Obama took to the American airwaves to announce the death of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
President Obama didn’t make his speech until 11:35 PM EST, but broadcast networks interrupted their programming at least an hour before to begin reporting the news. The show pre-empted by NBC? Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice.”

Just one night before the news of Osama bin Laden’s death, Trump was skewered by President Obama and Seth Meyers at the White House Correspondents’ dinner in Washington, D.C.
At the dinner, President Obama joked about Trump’s intention to run for presidency in 2012. “We all know about your credentials,” he said, bringing up Trump’s decision to fire actor Gary Busey on the NBC show. “These are the kind of decisions that would keep me up at night.”
Trump later commented on the speeches, saying, “I didn’t know that I’d be virtually the sole focus. I guess when you’re leading in the polls that sort of thing tends to happen. But I was certainly in a certain way having a good time listening. I don’t think the American people are having a good time with $5 gas. … I was thinking to myself as they were doing this, you know, the American people are really suffering and we’re all having fun at a gala.”
