THE STORY — (AUSTIN)

A gunman who fired shots from an automatic weapon on the University of Texas campus this morning and then apparently shot himself acted alone, the Austin American Statesman reports this afternoon.

Police now say the gunman “appears to have been a UT student,” the report says.

The campus was locked down all morning, then evacuated and closed at noon.

According to the Austin newspaper, the gunman fired an AK-47 near a campus intersection around 8:15 a.m. “With students pointing the way, officers chased the shooter, who ran into the Perry-Castaneda Library and up the stairs to the sixth floor. That’s where he appeared to have shot himself,” the story says.
