During hearings held this week, New York rapper Nasir “Nas” Jones requested joint custody of the child he shares with estranged wife Kelis and was ordered to pay out over $51,000 a month to her in spousal and child support.

According to reports, Nas will also have to pay for Kelis’ attorney’s fees.

UPDATE: 7:54 PM PT The judge just ordered Nas to pay $40,454 in spousal support and $10,647 in child support. And, Nas must pay disso-queen Laura Wasser’s attorney’s fees, to the tune of $46,022. Nas has just taken the stand in his divorce case, testifying that he wants overnights with his son. Kelis has custody for now, but Nas’ lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, wants his client to score some face time with the kid. (TMZ)

The rapper has reportedly been handling his legal issues in court this week.

The decision came after a two-day hearing determined that Nas had made enough money in recent months to pay more to support Kelis and the former couple’s son, Knight. The rapper has been paying nearly $40,000 a month to support them since July. (Associated Press)

The two ex-lovers allegedly attempted to reconcile their differences in early fall.

During Wednesday’s hearing Kelis said that the couple — who announced their intention to divorce in April after a four-year marriage — attempted to reconcile in September to no avail. She also reportedly testified that she has been having difficulty earning money because she is a new mother and doesn’t have a lot of job options outside of the music business. She told the court that Nas is slated to release two albums in 2010. (MTV)

Beyond her current court battle with Nas, Kelis has joined Interscope Records to jump-start her music career.

After much speculation following the release of a song titled “Acapella” on the Internet last week, singer-songwriter Kelis has announced that she has signed to Interscope Records through Will.i.am Music Group. “I love that I am now a new part of the Interscope family,” Kelis said via a statement. “2010 is around the corner and I can’t wait to put out new music and spend time with real music fans on tour again.” (Billboard)

No further details have been released as of now.
