The man who fatally shot former NFL player Joe McKnight in New Orleans last week has finally been arrested and charged with manslaughter, according to the Associated Press.
Ronald Gasser, 54, had previously been released without charges pending further investigation. He was arrested Monday, according to Jefferson Parish police.
Sheriff Newell Normand said the shooting Thursday was the result of a road rage incident. Normand said Gasser handed deputies his gun and confessed to killing McKnight, 28. According to police, Gasser shot McKnight three times from inside of his car as McKnight stood outside.
Normand has chastised the community for its response to the killing of McKnight in a tone that has been called increasingly condescending to those upset with the news of the pro-athlete’s death.
“Justice has no time period,” he said. “Justice is not a sprint, it is a marathon. These types of investigations are marathons. In fact it is not uncommon, and there is nothing that we have done in this case out of the ordinary or is that unusual.”
When he was questioned by reporters, he simply said “tough, I don’t care.”
Gasser’s bond was listed at $500K
As HelloBeautiful previously reported, a witness said she was leaving a store in the area and saw a man at the intersection yelling at another man, who was trying to apologize. Afterwards, she said “the man yelling shot the other man more than once.” McKnight died on the scene.
McKnight played for the University of Southern California Trojans from 2007-2009 and was drafted into the NFL in 2010 to the New York Jets, before he joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014. At the time of his death, McKnight was playing football in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos, but he was on his way back to the NFL. According to the Daily Beast, McKnight was about to be signed by the Minnesota Vikings, said his stepfather Elmo Lee.
“I just want people to know that this was not a troubled kid. The boy was just trying to make it back in the NFL, that’s all he wanted to do.”
McKnight is the second NFL player to die as a result of an apparent road rage incident this year— NOLA Saints defensive end Will Smith was killed in a similar situation this April.
