Mutulu Shakur, stepfather of rap legend Tupac Shakur, is eligible for parole. He has served thirty years of a sixty year sentence. The sentence came after Mutulu was convicted for orchestrating a string of robberies in the 1980s throughout New York and Connecticut, in which three people were killed.

“U.S. Justice Department spokesman Peter Carr tells PEOPLE that Shakur, 65, is eligible for mandatory parole and is scheduled to appear before the parole board at the federal penitentiary in Victorville, California, on April 7.

Shakur, who was sentenced in 1988, had previous parole hearings in 2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2012, and 2014, according to Carr.”

Mutulu, at one point, was on the list for America’s Most Wanted. He was also charged with aiding and abetting in the escape of Joanne Chesimard from a prison in New Jersey. Joanne was in jail for the killing of NJ police officer, Werner Foerester. If Joanne’s name doesn’t sound familiar, it’s because most know her by her new name, Assata Shakur.

Peter Carr said he’d recommend Mutulu’s release but the decision ultimately lies with the federal commission.
