SUGAR LAND, Texas – A Houston-area mayor escaped injury when he was robbed at gunpoint.

Sugar Land police on Wednesday said a suspect remained at large in the robbery of Mayor James Thompson.

Thompson, who says “it could happen to anybody,” was robbed Tuesday night in the driveway of his residence. The mayor had just arrived home following a city council meeting.

Thompson told police that he got out of his SUV when a gun was put to his head and the unknown man demanded cash.

Thompson says the thief, who then ordered him to crawl under the SUV, ran off with about $80 and the mayor’s cell phone.

Sugar Land is 20 miles southwest of Houston.
