New York City Is Setting Out On A Mission To Fight Violence Against Women In Communities Of Color

Rosemonde Pierre-Louis, pictured far left, is taking New York by storm as the commissioner of the city’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence. Just within the past year, Pierre-Louis has organized over 1,300 outreach events across the city where communities of color are disproportionately impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault.

The office’s work is in desperate need; figures from the Women of Color Network show that 40 percent of Black women report being sexually abused by the age of 18. Still, it’s widely known that in reality, even more women are abused than that because rape and sexual assault is grossly underreported across socioeconomic groups. Read more at The Huffington Post.
