Chicago Police Accused Of Operating A “Black Site”
A day after The Guardian reported shocking allegations that the Chicago Police Department illegally detains and beats suspects at a so-called CIA-like secret compound on the city’s West Side, law enforcement authorities released a statement denying the claims.
The police department told the paper that it “abides by all laws, rules and guidelines pertaining to any interviews of suspects or witnesses, at Homan Square or any other CPD facility.”
FCC’s Net Neutrality Vote Keeps The Internet Open For All
On Thursday the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) agreed to rules aimed at preventing broadband providers from striking deals with content providers like Google, Netflix or Twitter to move their data faster, and at the expense of other online traffic.
Net neutrality refers to the idea that Internet service providers won’t block or slow Web traffic, instead allowing all data to have equal access to its networks. That means you won’t be more inclined to watch a particular show on Amazon Prime instead of on Netflix because Amazon has struck a deal with your service provider to load its data faster.
What the FCC regulations do, however, is usher in a new era of government oversight where Internet service is deemed a public right. Consumers can complain if they don’t believe they are being treated fairly. Regulators will have broad powers to go after companies they believe aren’t acting in the public interest, including price gouging.
