DALLAS – An inmate died over the weekend after a fight with another inmate in the Lew Sterrett Detention Center, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

Mario Bernardo, 44, was pronounced dead Sunday evening at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Problems began Saturday afternoon around 2:15 when detention officers noticed Bernardo having medical problems, possibly a seizure, according to a news release.

The jailers called the Lew Sterrett medical staff. About 35 minutes later, the medical staff called for Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics, who rushed Bernardo to Parkland Hospital for emergency surgery for a head injury.

At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, jailers notified the Criminal Investigation and Physical Evidence sections.

According to the news release, investigators concluded that Bernardo fought with another inmate earlier in the day, and that’s where he got the head injury.

By 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Bernardo was taken off life support.

No charges have been filed yet against the other inmate involved in the fight. An investigation into Bernardo’s death is ongoing.
