The director announced that Mayor De Blasio has decided to rename Stuyvesant Avenue, between Lexington and Quincy, ‘Do The Right Thing Way,’ in honor of his classic movie, effective August 10th.
He wrote in a caption:
Today, August 10th In The Year Of Our Lawd, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio Signed A Proclamation Making Stuyvesant Avenue (Between Lexington And Quincy) Officially DO THE RIGHT THING WAY. This Is The Very 1st Time In The History Of New York City A Film Has Been Given This Honor. Thanks To Everyone In Front Of And Behind The Camera For Making A His (Her) Story.
Mookie and Da Mayor.
The office of Mayor De Blasio wrote in a statement pertaining to the new street name:
“Our city has a long and powerful history, brimming with dedicated New Yorkers who have fought to improve their communities in countless ways – from public service to community activism to the arts. It is essential that we commemorate those who have built up our past as we work to build a better future for our city. This legislation ensures that we remain connected to our history and to the important values embodied by these individuals.
Due to legalities, reports say that the street was unable to be renamed in previous years, but a ceremony has been held, making the news official.
Congratulations to Spike Lee on the huge accomplishment. We can’t wait to see what’s next.
