Matt Kenny, the Madison, Wis. police officer named in the fatal shooting death of 19-year-old Tony Robinson, has been cleared of any wrongdoing after the findings of an internal investigation. Madison Police Department officials released summarized details of the investigation on Wednesday (Jun. 3), which found that Officer Kenny did not overstep his use of deadly force, according to office policy.
Tony Terrell Robinson Jr. was fatally shot by Kenny on March 6, after he reportedly attacked the officer. Friends and family acknowledge that while Robinson used hallucinogenic mushrooms and was under the influence of drugs, the unarmed Black teen posed no threat to Kenny. The shooting prompted a series of protests in and around Madison — many of them involving high school students — with support from national efforts such as the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
Back in May, Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne already stated that Kenny would not be facing any state charges. Kenny, who has been on paid leave since March, will rejoin the Madison force – although resistance around his reinstatement might be forthcoming.
As reported by local news outlet Fox 6, Madison Police Chief Mike Koval stood by his officer.
From Fox 6:
“We’ve had a criminal finding, and we’ve now had an administrative finding and if everybody’s concerned about the use of deadly force, I think that’s been answered in two different reviewing capacities. To those who say I should relocate him, I do not have a branch in Montana. I’m not the FBI, nor would I vanish him as such. He’s a viable member of the Madison Police Department and he will be taking on a role that’s still very critical to how we operate,” Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said Wednesday.
Chief Koval’s statements were backed by a statement released by the Wisconsin Professional Police Association (WPPA), stating that the Madison Police’s findings were the “correct result.”
