The mail has stopped in one Oak Cliff neighborhood because of a dangerous dog.

Residents in the 2500 and 2600 blocks of Poinsettia Drive say their mail hasn’t been delivered since Jan. 20. They’ve been told they must now physically pick it up at the post office.

“It’s just inconceivable that they just won’t deliver the mail indefinitely. And that’s the way it seems like it is right now,” said resident John James.

Postal officials said the letter carrier for the area has been attacked eight times in the past two months by a pit bull that weighs about 100 pounds. He won’t be returning until things are made safer.

“It’s my understanding that the dog has bit the postman four times and one time he had him down on the ground. He could have been bitten very badly,” said Marliee Kingsbury, an area resident. “He’s afraid of the dog, you know. He thinks the dog will attack him again.”

There was no answer at the door Tuesday when FOX 4 tried to interview the dog’s owner. But barking could be heard from inside the home.

The Postal Service said it is working with the animal control officers hoping to take the owner to court.

“We hope that after a hearing, once a decision has been made by the city, the pet owner will be forced to restrain the dog so we can restore mail delivery to that area,” said spokesman McKinney Boyd.
