A 9-year-old boy died Thursday after apparently committing suicide at his elementary school.

Police said paramedics were dispatched to Stewart’s Creek Elementary School in The Colony just before 1 p.m.

A school staff member found the boy unconscious in the bathroom. He had reportedly hanged himself, police said.

Montana Denton Lance was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, according a medical examiner’s report.

Parents interviewed by FOX 4 said they were having a hard time comprehending a suicide on campus, especially with a boy so young.

“You don’t want to think of an elementary student that has to do that or feels like the need to do that. They’re all in fifth grade. They are as old as 11. It’s too young,” said Stephanie Rousch.

Many struggled to explain the situation to their children.

Jimmy Hopkins said his son, Reid, and neighbor, Nathaniel Sybertz, were friends with the boy. They liked to watch TV, play video games and play with Legos together.

“He was my first friend when I moved into my house. We used to play together and go to Reid’s house” Sybertz said.

School officials said grief counselors would be on campus on Friday.
