Ruth Brown is an R&B music pioneer. A singer-songwriter and actress, she had a series of hits for Atlantic Records in the 1950s, that garnered Atlantic the moniker “The House the Rose Built.”

Throughout her career, Brown was the recipient of numerous awards, including both a Tony and a Grammy. She used her celebrity to advocate for musicians rights and was instrumental in the founding of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.

Brown was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. She passed away in 2006 after complications following a surgical procedure.
