FORT WORTH — Just in time for the holidays, nearly a dozen North Texas families got the keys to brand-new homes on Saturday.

Habitat for Humanity dedicated a new neighborhood in Fort Worth for families in need.

The Jackson family feels like it’s coming home after touring their new residence. “I’m kind of excited and speechless about what I’m seeing right now,” new homeowner Crystal Jackson said.

They are one of 11 families who got the keys to a new home Saturday at a ceremony in Fort Worth.

It works like this: Struggling families buy new houses at a deep discount, paying largely only for the materials. Volunteers help the families with construction.

Jackson, who is a single mother, works at a hospital. Until now, her family has been living with her mother in a small apartment.

A Habitat home represents a new beginning, and a new chance for Jackson’s son.

“Look at our house now,” she said. “It’s in a better neighborhood, a neighborhood full of kids. I think I’m going to like it.”

Over the past 20 years, the Trinity branch of Habitat for Humanity has built nearly 400 homes in and around Fort Worth.
