In celebration of Black History Month 2018, Radio One Detroit is highlighting Detroit landmarks that have had an impact on black history!

Although this landmark is not located in Detroit, it still makes the list for its major contribution to the history of African Americans.
Idlewild, located in Yates, Michigan (about 3 ½ hours north of Detroit), became an important place for African Americans from 1912-1964. During this time many areas would not allow certain privileges to African Americans. Idlewild served as one of few resorts in the country where people of color could vacation and own property.
During its prime, Idlewild hosted many famous entertainers and professionals. Many would travel just to be included in this amazing experience and to watch their favorite musicians perform.
Although the resort was doing well, after the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 the resort’s traffic began to decline. Other resorts were now accommodating African Americans and travelers started to take advantage of these new spaces.
Today Idlewild is still recognized as an important part of African American history. The National Idlewilders Club continues to hold events and educate people on the history of Idlewild.
