The Black Lives Matter movement has reached a global scale with the recent death of a mentally ill man in Ottawa, Canada, on Monday.

Abdirahman Abdi died in the hospital after he was arrested and beaten by police officersThe Guardian reports.

After the 37-year-old’s death, a crowd of 500 protesters shouted “Black lives matter” as they marched toward the Ottawa police headquarters. The demonstration lasted until late afternoon.

Out of respect for Abdi’s family, the protesters were peaceful, and no arrests were made.

The demands of the crowd echo the sentiments of many Americans around the country: 1.) The police need to wear body cameras 2.) They need more training on how to de-escalate incidents involving minorities.

So far no police officers have been arrested, but one involved in this particular incident was taken off patrol.

International solidarity in times of crises are necessary to tilt the needle toward real change.
