Spring 2016 is all about the jumpsuit. Jumpsuits are the perfect one piece that exudes effortless and chic style. Wear it correctly and stand out, but wearing an ill fitted jumpsuit can have one looking like a potato sack instead of style perfection.
Here are 5 tips to rocking a jumpsuit whether you are jet setting or jazzing up your look!
Make sure it’s tailored to your height.
Nothing is worse (or makes you look stumpy) than a jumpsuit that is too long for you. Covering your shoes with fabric is a no-no. Take a pair of shoes in the heel height you will wear most often with the piece to a tailor and have him lengthen or shorten the hem. This will prevent you from looking stumpy. See the difference between Angela Bassett and the model? Both are wearing this Milly By Michelle jumpsuit, but the hemline on the model makes the jumpsuit appear to fit her better (though I am partial to how Angela fills it out).
It’s all about the fit.
A jumpsuit that is even slightly too tight will draw attention to all the wrong places. This House of CB jumpsuit below was worn by both Eve and Meagan Good. Who wore it better? In my opinion, Eve. The jumpsuit is tugging at Meagan’s crotch area (meaning that it’s too tight in the hips) and distracting to the eye.
Create a waist.
One’s shape can easily get lost in a jumpsuit. Prevent this by choosing a jumpsuit that automatically cinches the waist or separate the look with a statement belt.
With Queen Latifah, this jumpsuit automatically has a drawstring waist, thus defining her waist without her having to purchase or do anything extra. Winning!
Bring out the blazer.
Want to wear a jumpsuit to work or break up a patterned jumpsuit? Pair this fashionable piece with an equally fashionable blazer. A blazer adds dimension to the look and can give off a chic air if you drape the piece over your shoulders. (Again, beauties, tailor your jumpsuits! This look would have been perfect on Kelly Rowland if her shoes were not covered and the fabric dragging on the streets of Paris!)
Wear heels.
Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, but fitted jumpsuits, wide-leg jumpsuits, to me, always look more elegant with heels. Jumpsuits are great for elongating the body, look supermodel sexy by adding to the look with heels! (Kelly redeemed herself with this perfectly fitted jumpsuit).
Bonus tip: Don’t be afraid of a color or pattern! A bold jumpsuit or a funky pattern will make you stand out in a room!
