In case you missed it, a dreadlocked beauty queen competed in the Miss World competition.

Dr. Sanneta Myrie, who was born to a single mother in Kingston, Jamaica, was midway through medical school when she decided to enter the beauty pageant.

“I have always wanted to be a doctor and help people, but who wouldn’t want to be the brand ambassador for Jamaica?” she told Femde, adding that she gave up her internship to pursue this other dream. “But I have the rest of my life to do medicine, so I am just exploring all that life has to offer now.”

The doctor and pageant queen continued describing her look by explaining, “I lock my hair because I identify with it. I am very much rooted in that Afro-centric nature, where we as Jamaicans are rooted. It’s my expression,” the 24-year-old told BET.

It is so wonderful to see our unique hair styles being showcased in so many different platforms. We all scowled when Giuliana Rancic insulted Zendaya for rocking dreads, indicating to us that we still have a long way to go before our image is accepted for its full glory and flyness.

But we shall not be deterred. In a year dusted with #blackgirlmagic, from Viola Davis’ Emmy win to Ava Duvernay’s sold out doll, our beauty and excellence is getting the spotlight it deserves, and we’re here for that.

Myrie came in third place in the talent competition at Miss World for her reggae inspired movements, dedicated to women all over the world who are enslaved. She’s still first place to us!
