The lawyers for the Waller County jail in Hempstead, Texas are placing the blame for Sandra Bland‘s death on her family.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, the county jail’s defense in the ongoing wrongful death suit is that Bland killed herself because no one in her family would pay the $515 bail for release. Supposedly, Bland called a male friend repeatedly who ignored her calls, she reached her sister who didn’t help her and a bail-bondsmen also reached out to Bland’s mother who was allegedly unwilling to help.

The lawyer for Bland’s family, Cannon Lambert says these claims are erroneous and unfounded.

“It is very, very early in this litigation for them to have filed that kind of motion,” Lambert said. “They’re making allegations about what my clients know or what my clients did, without even having spoken to them, and I’m curious about how it is they can come to the conclusion that [Bland’s male friend] was ignoring phone calls? They’ve certainly not given us any statements in discovery that reflects that that’s the case.”

The family has also filed a motion to view any other surveillance footage from Bland’s time in jail, a request that has been denied by Waller County.
