A man was charged with setting off an explosive device at a Walmart location in Jackson, MS this Sunday.
Marshall W. Leonard, a 61-year-old of Tupelo, may be facing a life sentence if convicted. Leonard drove to the Walmart’s entrance in North Gloster at approximately 1:30 am CT.
Leonard lit the device and threw it into the hallway of the store. Upon seeing an employee on break, the suspect warned him, saying: “You better run.”
The employee followed his orders to get as far from the package as possible. The device made a small explosion that made minimal damage to the store; no one was hurt from the attack.
Pieces from the homemade explosive device are now being studied at a crime lab.
An avid supporter of the Mississippi flag, Leonard had previously protested against Walmart’s decision to discontinue selling the Confederate battle flag. He posted threats on the Daily Journal’s Facebook page last Wednesday, one of them reading:
“Journal corporate, you are on final warning. You are part of the problem. As a result of this, y’all are going down, along with Walmart, WTVA, Reeds department store, and all the rest of the anti-American crooks. I’m not kidding. No messing around anymore!”
Leonard was captured after being found during a traffic stop. The bombing suspect’s first day in court is Tuesday.
