The man who fatally stabbed E’Dena Hines, the step-granddaughter of actor Morgan Freeman, has been charged with murder.

According to Pix11, police revealed Hines’ boyfriend, 30-year-old Lamar Davenport, is currently under psychiatric evaluation at a local hospital. He was brought in as an “emotionally disturbed person” early Sunday morning after he was seen stabbing Hines to death near her home in the Washington Heights area of New York. Hines was the granddaughter of Freeman’s first wife, Jeanette Adair Bradshaw.

Some have called her death an apparent “exorcism.”

A witness who saw the stabbing from his window said he heard screams from the actress as Davenport said he needed to “get the demons out.”

Pix11 reports:

“I heard two screeches and I looked out my window,” neighbor George Hudacko said. “I heard him mumbling ‘God’ and ‘Jesus,’ and his hand was moving up and down. So I ran to call police.”

Police arrived on scene, but it was too late — Hines died on the way to the hospital. Friends of Hines said they saw her and Davenport during dinner on Saturday evening and everything appeared to be normal. The 33-year-old had just wrapped up a film scheduled to be released next year. After studying acting at New York University, she headed to Memphis, Tennessee to teach acting to underprivileged youth.

Hines recently moved back to New York to perform at several theaters. She often blogged about her experiences.

Davenport now faces a second-degree murder charge for her death.
