The Dallas Zoo says a baby giraffe died Tuesday evening after an accident in its enclosure.

“This is a huge loss for our giraffe herd, our staff and our guests,” zoo president and CEO Gregg Hudson said in a written statement. “We’re crushed, and everyone here is in mourning.”

The giraffe, named Kipenzi, was born on April 10. The event was broadcast online around the world.

Zoo officials said Kipenzi had been running in the feeding yard.

“She made a sharp turn and ran into the perimeter edge of the habitat,” a statement said. “Preliminary results indicate three broken vertebrae in her neck.”

The baby giraffe died immediately after the 5:30 p.m. incident. Her mother was allowed to visit Kipenzi before the body was removed.

The zoo is encouraging guests to post photos of Kipenzi and messages of support for the staff on its Facebook and Instagram pages.
