First Lady Michelle Obama has always taken education seriously, but she’s taking it a step further with her Reach Higher initiative. “I exist because I have an education,” Michelle Obama told Rickey Smiley during his exclusive interview at the White House.
The Reach Higher initiative is the First Lady’s effort to inspire every student in America to take charge of their future by completing, whether through professional training program, community college, or a four-year institution.
Michelle Obama said one problem with our education system is that it isn’t cool. “We’re not talking about it enough,” she said. But another major barrier in education is the notion that college isn’t for everyone.
“It’s those notions that I just can’t do it, because I don’t know anyone in my neighborhood or family who has done it,” said Michelle Obama. “My parents didn’t go to college, but I understand the value in investing in an education.”
