There are a lot of people out there, and I’ll be honest and included myself among them, who thought the New Boyz wouldn’t last long after their smash YOU’RE A JERK exploded onto the charts. But group members Ben J and Legacy have proven the doubters wrong, maintained a presence in the game, and are looking to once again find hit single magic with new release Better With the Lights Off. Club/pop/rap hybrid specialists The Cataracs work the production here, serving up an appropriately light and simple beat for the Boyz to bounce over; and bounce they do, laying down auto-tuned verses that find them moving into grown and sexy territory.
Add in a hook from Chris Brown, which, I have to say, is kind of hilarious – “Hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but you look better with the lights off” – and you’ve got a combination radio should eat up.
