BCS Championship Game 2011: Final Update, Auburn Wins BCS Title With Late FG

The Auburn Tigers are the national champions.  They managed to defeat the Oregon Ducks, 22-19, behind Cam Newton, their strong defensive line, a little guy named Michael Dyer and the field goal kicking of Wes Byrum.

No one expected this game to be so low scoring.  However, after a first quarter where managed to see three interceptions and no points scored on the board, it was a big sign that the game would be a low-scoring defensive struggle.

Cam Newton managed to star in the second period with a pair of touchdown passes.  The Heisman winner finished the game with 265 passing yards, two touchdowns, one interception and 65 rushing yards.

For a majority of the game, the stars for Auburn was their defensive line featured Nick Fairley, Zach Clayton and Mike Blanc.  Auburn’s defense managed to hold down the Ducks to only one touchdown in the first half and one touchdown in the second half.

They managed to the nation’s top-ranked offensive team to only 19 points.

But the biggest difference maker was Michael Dyer, a true freshman, and his timely running with the clock running out in the football game.

It was Dyer’s key runs that setup an easy 19-yard-field goal for Wes Byrum that won the game.

Dyer finished the game with 143 rushing yards on 22 carries.

It was Auburn’s first National Championship since 1957.  It was also the fifth straight national title won by an SEC team.

Final Score: Auburn 21, Oregon 19
