Local Citizens Will Deliver Gift Bags to the Homeless of Fort Worth
On Monday, December 21, 2009, volunteers from the Labre Society, a local charitable
organization, will deliver over 500 Christmas gift bags to the homeless of Fort Worth, TX.
Volunteers will meet at 6:30 a.m. and caravan to the homeless shelters on East Lancaster to
distribute gift bags to adults and 40 children’s bags to Lowdon-Schutts Women and Children’s
Shelter at Presbyterian Night Shelter.
Beginning in October, Labre Society began collecting monetary and in-kind donations to fill
the bags. Gifts included in the bags are: hats, gloves, bus passes, toothbrush and toothpaste,
lip balm, toiletries and several food items. Donations from corporations, social service
agencies, city entities and concerned individuals have made the bags possible in 2009.
Labre Society board members and volunteers will gather at Conlon’s Pub on Sunday, December
20 to set up an assembly line and pack the bags.
The Labre Society, named for Benedict Joseph Labre, patron saint of the homeless, is a local
charity dedicated to providing items of necessity to the homeless during the holidays. Anna
Gaines, secretary of the board, began the tradition in 1999 by handing out 20 bags of socks
and work gloves to day laborers. Since then the effort has grown to include over 100
volunteers, dozens of donors, and hundreds of homeless individuals and families who receive
holiday bags filled with practical gifts.
