T.I. Gets Probation Revoked & 11 Months In Jail

UPDATE: TMZ reports that T.I. has had his probation revoked and was given 11 months in jail.

Hip-Hop Pioneer Rodger “Uncle Jamm” Clayton Dies

Rodger “Uncle Jamm” Clayton, one of the first promoters of hip-hop on the West Coast, reportedly died Sunday of a heart attack, TheUrbanDaily.com has learned.

Clayton, as the leader of “Uncle Jamm’s Army” in the early 1980s, threw roving parties that attracted thousands of rap fans, and filled venues like the Los Angeles Sports Arena with little more than photocopied fliers and word of mouth. The Uncle Jamm’s Army gigs were instrumental in jump-starting the careers of Ice-T, Egyptian Lover and many others.

Greg Mack, the legendary programmer of seminal Los Angeles rap radio station KDAY and one-time rival of Clayton’s, remembered him fondly in this statement:

Rodger Clayton, leader of Uncle Jamms Army, was one of the most influential people on the west coast when it comes to the hip hop movement. When I first moved to L.A. in 1983, I was shocked that a promoter could fill the L.A. Sports Arena with 8000 people for a “dance.” No artists, just djs’ such as Egyptian Lover and DJ Bobcat. When setting the programming for KDAY I had asked Roger to allow us to be a part of the excitement…he said, “NO, we don’t need radio.” At that time he was right. It prompted me to start my own group, The Mixmasters, and a rivalry began; it wasn’t always friendly but it was respectful, most of the time. When Rodger decided he did need radio, he and I ended up in a lawsuit because he didn’t feel we were running his commercials properly. His lawyer, the late Johnny Cochran represented him. After realizing how stupid we both were, we ended being even closer friends. Rodger went on to work at KGFJ, KDAY, KJLH, and several other radio stations in L.A. doing mix shows and certain events. Within the last years he owned multiple record stores specializing in oldies and promoted for Niederlander Concerts doing several shows at the Greek Theater and surrounding areas.

I last spoke with Rodger a few weeks ago and he sounded happier than ever saying he was bringing a big show to Fresno. He wanted me to know he had some tickets for me and looked forward to seeing me. He will truly be missed and I hope that people will now take a look at everything he created for the people of L.A. and Riverside. Not only did he give light to West Coast Artists but East Coast artists as well. He never wanted to do interviews when people would ask him for his story, he always wanted to do his own book and/or movie for Uncle Jamms Army, so he was hesitant to give anyone an in depth interview.

I’m proud to say that he and I had many talks over the last few years regarding all that had happened in his life and mine. We talked about a lot of things, and more importantly we found out how much respect we did have for each other. He and I also would comment on how “little” documentation there has been of the West Coasts’ rap history, we both felt it inadequate. And I still do.

I will miss him…

Los Angeles, California — Friday night’s star-studded “Hope for Haiti” telethon has raised a record-breaking $58 million, with more donations continuing to pour in from around the world, the benefit’s organizers announced Saturday.

The preliminary figure is a record for donations made by the public through a disaster relief telethon, according to a news release from telethon organizers.

Additionally, the “Hope for Haiti Now” album, a compilation of the night’s musical performances made available on Apple’s iTunes, was the No. 1 album in 18 countries Saturday. Sales figures for iTunes are still being calculated, and the preliminary figure of $58 million does not include donations from corporations or large private donors.

People will be able to make donations to “Hope for Haiti” via phone, Web, text messaging and regular mail for the next six months, according to the news release.

NEW YORK – Though the all-star telethon was titled “Hope for Haiti Now,” for most of its two hours, it was filled with tear-jerking, depressing moments, from mournful songs and grim-faced pleas from celebrities to the suffering faces of the quake-battered victims themselves.

It took Haiti’s own native son to lift Friday evening’s despairing tone to one of hope and even revival.

“Enough of this moping, man, let’s rebuild Haiti, let’s show ‘em how we do it where we come from!” Wyclef Jean, the singer and producer, shouted after singing the downbeat “Rivers of Babylon,” with a Haitian flag around his neck.

He segued into the joyful tune “Yele” with an island beat, as musicians danced around him, singing the refrain: “Earthquake, we see the earth shake, but the soul of the Haitian people will never break!”

Jean showcased the resilient spirit of a nation in the midst of catastrophe. On Jan. 12, a powerful earthquake struck the already impoverished country, killing an estimated 200,000 people, displacing many more and reducing much of Haiti to ruins.

The telethon, shown on all the major networks and streamed live on many Web sites, was quickly put together by George Clooney andMTV Networks, along with the help of others, to raise millions of dollars for the Caribbean country.

The list of participating celebrities rivaled any top awards show: Justin Timberlake, Brad Pitt, former President Clinton, Muhammad Ali, Beyonce, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Halle Berry, and many more. Luminaries likeSteven Spielberg worked the phone banks, talking to donors.

“Hey Steven Spielberg, it’s really cool to talk to you,” one woman said to the Academy Award-winning filmmaker.

John Mayer called in a $500,000 donation before the telethon began, according to a representative for MTV. Officials did not have an immediate total for the relief funds raised by the telethon.

Some stars like Matt Damon and Clint Eastwood recounted tragic moments from the quake; others likeDenzel Washington offered inspirational words. Most of the musical performances were downcast, emotional songs. John Legend sang “I Feel Like A Motherless Child.” Kid Rock, Keith Urban and Sheryl Crow sang “Lean On Me.” Beyonce, with Coldplay’s Chris Martin backing her on piano, revised her hit “Halo” with new lyrics: “Haiti we can see your halo, we pray you won’t fade away.”

Madonna provided one of the few upbeat moments with her choir-backed performance of “Like A Prayer.”

Jay-Z, Rihanna and U2’s Bono and The Edge debuted a new song, “Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour),” as Jay-Z rapped from London: “When the sky falls, and the earth quakes, we gon’ put this back together, we won’t break.”

The telethon was broadcast from New York, London, Los Angeles and Haiti, where CNN’s Anderson Cooperinterviewed quake victims and anchored news clips of the tragedy.

Haitians were able to listen on Radio One Haiti.

A crowd made up mostly of Haiti’s wealthier elite gathered Friday night at Break Time restaurant, one of the only still open in Port-au-Prince, and one of the only places residents could watch the telethon.

Owner Patrick Alexis said he enjoyed seeing the celebrities but was skeptical the money would get to people who need it.

“It’s easy to do a telethon on behalf of the Haitian people, but who will really get the money? I know my country, I know my people, I know the leaders,” he said.

Rabbel Bertrand, 16, who was heading to New Jersey to because his school collapsed, was surprised by the attention on his country.

“I didn’t realize all those celebrities knew Haiti. When you talk about Haiti, people usually just talk about the bad things,” Bertrand said.

Viewers can purchase performances from the evening on Saturday by way of iTunes for 99 cents, with those proceeds going to relief aid as well.

The telethon won’t be the last major celebrity effort for Haiti; BET plans to hold its own all-star telethon on Feb. 5, with Diddy and Queen Latifah as hosts. It will also be aired on MTV and VH1.

UPDATE: Lloyd Banks Being Bailed Out Of Jail Today

UPDATE:

According to an interview with MTV, Lloyd Banks’ laywer, Patrick Ducharme, says that Lloyd will be home today.

“There has been an agreement between the prosecution and defense for his release and the release for each of the individuals,” Ducharme told MTV News on Monday (January 11). “I expect for him to be released tomorrow morning. It’s just a question of posting some bail, which I’m going to do. I’m going up there tonight with the money, and they’ll be released sometime tomorrow morning.”

Banks’ bail has been set at $50,000 while the others involved in the incident have had their bail set at $25,000. He will have to go on trial in the near future. Ducharme plans to enter a not-guilty plea on Banks’ behalf in three to four weeks.

Rapper Lloyd Banks and three associates were arrested in Ontario, Canada this weekend for assaulting a promoter, AllHipHop.com has confirmed.

Banks, born Christopher Charles Lloyd and the three other men were arrested for allegedly assaulting promoter Chris Hines of Chris Hines/Ultimate Entertainment.

The G-Unit rapper was allegedly booked at Club N.V. in Ontario, Canada to perform select cuts from his catalog.

Banks was allegedly late to the venue and only performed one song and walked off the stage, further inciting an already agitated crowd.

According to reports, Banks and the three other men assaulted Hines in a hotel room near Kitchener, when Hines reportedly refused to pay Banks for the performance.

Hines was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated and released for multiple contusions and head trauma.

As of this morning (January 10) Banks, Shaun McGee, Tyrell Cooper and Nicholas Sloan are in custody in Kitchener’s District 1 police station.

Sources told AllHipHop.com that the four men will be charged with assault, robbery and forced confinement.
