Basketball Player Bryce Dejean-Jones Shot And Killed In Dallas

New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was fatally shot after breaking down the door to a Dallas apartment early Saturday, says local police. He was only 23-years-old.

According to The Associated Press, Dejean-Jones was visiting his girlfriend’s apartment for the first time while in town for his daughter’s birthday party. After taking a walk, he went to the wrong floor and began banging on the wrong apartment. When no one came to the door, he broke it down. The man who lived in the apartment shot at Dejean-Jones, striking him in the abdomen. He later died in the hospital.

It’s not known if drugs and alcohol were used, the NBA said. Toxicology reports will be released in this week.

“Bryce’s dedication and hard work on his journey to the NBA will forever serve as an inspiration to us all,” said National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts said on Twitter. “The news I pray every day I never have to hear.”

The shooter will not face any criminal charges. In Texas, it’s completely legal for someone to use deadly force to protect themselves from intruders, the AP noted.

Dejean-Jones, a native from Los Angeles, made his NBA debut in January and signed a multi-year contract with the New Orleans club in February.

RIP.

Whether you agree with spanking your children or not, a recent study says you cannot deny that it has long-lasting negative effects on children’s mental health.

According to Good Housekeeping, researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Michigan analyzed data from more than 150,000 children over a 50-year period and found that spanking was linked to aggression, antisocial behavior, mental health problems, cognitive difficulties, low self-esteem, and bunch of other negative outcomes. They also found that there were no benefits of spanking–at all.

Lead researcher Elizabeth Gershoff told the Chicago Tribune that for those who say they “turned out OK” after being spanked as a child, she is clear: “We turned out ok in spite of spanking, not because of it,” she  “When I was a child, there were no seat belts in cars. Do I think I turned out ok because my parents didn’t put me in a seat belt? No. I think I turned out because we didn’t get in an accident.”

Just food for thought folks.

The Only Black Female CEO of a Fortune 500 Company Just Stepped Down

In sad news, Xerox’s Ursula Burns, the first black woman CEO of one of America’s 500 largest companies, announced that she will be stepping down from the role later this year. But she isn’t going too far.

According to New York Magazine, Burns has accepted a new role as the company’s Chairman of Post-Separation Document Technology, in which she will come up with digital document management systems.

“I am looking forward to my role as chairman of the Document Technology company and to continuing my deep personal and professional commitment to its success,” she said in a statement. “I remain focused, however, on ensuring Xerox and the post-separation companies are positioned to build on our strong heritage and capture new opportunities we have identified to create value for employees, customers and shareholders,” she added.

Burns has been with Xerox since 1980.

Once Burns leaves her current role, there will be no Black, female CEOs of any S&P 500 companies, with only 19 female CEOs at all, NY Mag noted.
