One pint-sized Massachusetts resident got to live out his dream of becoming a police officer with the help of a local department, The Huffington Post reports.

Shavez Forte, who is battling stage four cancer, was sworn in as an honorary member of the Pittsfield Police Department on Monday. The five-year-old was given a badge, uniform, handcuffs, and even helped catch an assault suspect on his first day. During the swearing-in ceremony, Officer Forte promised to do good in school, listen to his parents, and remain brave.

The day was also special for the police department and Officer Darren Derby, who served as Forte’s partner. Derby told reporters the little boy’s ambition left him overwhelmed.

TWC News reports:

“People in uniform are their heroes,” Officer Darren Derby said. “That’s what they see on TV. They want to be a fireman. They want to be a police officer and catch bad guys. And he got that opportunity today. My whole goal in wearing this uniform is to help those in need, and that’s ultimately what we’re here for. It’s kind of taken over me emotionally. I’m almost at a loss for words when I’m with him.”

Derby said he has a friend for life in Officer Forte. Check out more moments from Shavez’s big day here.
