In recent weeks, we have faced heartbreaking news with the Charleston Massacre, and the seemingly subsequent aftermath of churches burning. We’ve had conversations about the Confederate flag, we’ve seen one woman, Bree Newsome, and we’ve had conversations about the lack of conversations the nation has about race and racism. In the wake of that, it is sometimes really difficult to decipher the positive news among the negative news that we can’t escape for even a news cycle. But once in a while, it is good to remember that there are positive changes occurring in the country as well, sometimes in the form of symbolisms.

It has taken a while, but Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will finally be honored in his home state of Georgia. Artist Andy Davis has been chosen to create the sculpture that will be in the Capitol grounds, and will overlook Liberty Plaza. The best part about it  is that the MLK statue will replace Tom Watson who was a White supremacist politician. Now while we definitely should not mistake symbolic changes for other kinds of changes that bear real consequence to the lives of everyday Black people, it makes a huge difference when a state chooses to recognize particular people in history. Good change Georgia, good change.
