Earlier this week, a 5-year-old girl was struck and killed by a leaping sturgeon while boating with her family in northern Florida.

According to PEOPLE:

Officials told the paper that Jaylon Rippy was struck Thursday by the fish while boating on the Suwannee River. According to a GoFundMe set up for the family, Rippy died early Friday, and both her brother and mother could require surgery.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has confirmed this case as the first sturgeon fatality in the Suwannee River. The GoFundMe account supporting the Rippy family has raised nearly $8,000 since it was started on Friday.

We pray for the Rippy family and their loved ones during this devastating time.
