Authorities fear hundreds may have drowned on Sunday after a boat in the Mediterranean Sea capsized while carrying about 700 people.

USA Today reports:

he Italian Coast Guard said the vessel was carrying 500 to 700 people when the incident happened around midnight local time, the BBC reported.

The coast guard said at least 24 people were confirmed dead, but the death toll is expected to rise into the hundreds, the Associated Press reported.

The incident occurred 60 miles off the Libyan coast and 120 miles south of the Italian island Lampedusa.

Italian coast guards have rescued dozens of people so far. We are keeping all those affected in our prayers and will update you as more information surfaces.
