(RNN) – Attorneys for George Zimmerman said Tuesday they have lost touch with him, and are withdrawing their counsel.
The last time they heard from him was Sunday.
Hal Uhrig, Zimmerman’s former attorney, said Zimmerman has contacted Fox News Sean Hannity, as well as prosecutors working on the case.
“We were quite astonished at that,” Uhrig said.
Zimmerman made news most recently with a website he launched designed to raise funds for his defense. Zimmerman has admitted to shooting and killing Trayvon Martin, 17, on the night of Feb. 26 in Sanford, FL.
The website titled The Real George Zimmerman is asking for donations to help with his legal defense fund, as the website says, for the “life altering event which led me to become the subject of intense media coverage.”
The background to the website is an American Flag with a link to donate to his defense fund, as well as the headers “The Facts,” “My Race,” “Album” and “Contact.”
“I have created a PayPal account solely linked on this website as I would like to provide an avenue to thank my supporters personally and ensure that any funds provided are used only for living expenses and legal defense, in lieu of my forced inability to maintain employment. I will also personally maintain accountability of all funds received.”
Zimmerman says on the website that media coverage has forced him to “leave my home, my school, my employer, my family and ultimately, my entire life. This website’s sole purpose is to ensure my supporters they are receiving my full attention without any intermediaries.”
Under the heading “The Facts,” Zimmerman does not give an account of what happened that night, but states that he is “grateful to my friends that have come to my aid, whether publicly or personally, never questioning my integrity or actions, understanding that I cannot discuss the details of the event on February 26th, and allowing law enforcement to proceed with their investigation unhindered. Once again, I thank you for your patience and I assure you, the facts will come to light.”
Under the link “My Race” is a quote by Thomas Paine, one of the Founding Fathers of the U.S.: “The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion.”
Zimmerman’s lawyers and a friend confirmed the authenticity of the website to CNN. Frank Taaffe, a friend of Zimmerman’s, told CNN’s sister network, HLN, that the website does not mean Zimmerman expects to be charged in connection with Martin’s death.
